Many people overlook the condition of surge protectors and power strips. These wear out over time and can quietly become hazards, especially if they're overloaded or tucked away under furniture.

If you’ve noticed any flickering lights, warm outlets, or have a breaker that’s always tripping, you may have dangerous electrical issues. Mr. Electric can help you stay safe. We’ve seen how neglected systems can lead to hazards and expensive property damage. Whether you're dealing with an older home, planning a renovation, or running a business that can't afford downtime, working with a qualified electrician in Cleves, Ohio, will help you avoid risks. Keep reading for information about common electrical concerns and how you can prevent an emergency.
If your house was built before the 1950s and hasn’t had a full electrical overhaul, there's a chance it still has knob-and-tube wiring hidden in the walls. This early method of wiring, while considered innovative in its day, has long since outlived its usefulness. The insulation breaks down, wires are exposed to air, and there’s no grounding, just a live wire and a neutral wire. The biggest issue is that the knob-and-tube wasn’t designed for today’s electrical demands. Modern households rely on dozens of plugged-in devices, high-wattage appliances, and HVAC systems that draw far more power than a 1930s electrical plan could support. Even if your outlets look updated, many homeowners are shocked to discover that the underlying system remains dangerously outdated. If you suspect your home may have knob-and-tube, you need an inspection from experienced electricians in Cleves.

Aluminum wiring became popular in the 1960s and 70s during a period of high copper prices. It was legal, widely used, and, for a while, considered a solid alternative. But over the decades, aluminum has proven to be unreliable and unsafe in residential and commercial buildings. Aluminum expands and contracts with heat more than copper does. Over time, this movement loosens connections at switches and outlets and increases the risk of arcing and fire. The oxidation that builds up on aluminum wire also creates resistance, which means more heat in the wires and more strain on your system. The solution isn’t always a full rewire. Electricians in Cleves who are trained in aluminum mitigation techniques can guide you through your options and help you avoid future failures. Don’t assume that just because the lights turn on, everything’s safe.
Full rewiring is a major investment. If your system is fundamentally sound and your issues are localized, a partial upgrade might be the smarter route. The key is getting an honest evaluation from a professional electrician who understands safety codes and your long-term goals. A full rewire replaces all the wiring and usually includes upgrading to a modern panel with circuit breakers, grounded outlets, and added capacity. It’s the best choice for homes with ongoing electrical issues, major renovations, or original wiring that’s decades out of date. Partial upgrades focus on improving specific parts of your system. If you’re adding a new kitchen, converting an attic, or finishing a basement, this kind of work often makes sense. It’s more affordable upfront, but it’s only effective if the rest of your system is reliable. A qualified electrician in Cleves can evaluate the current load, identify weak points, and recommend the most cost-effective way forward.

Read MoreI called into Mr. Electric of Cincinnati West and was greeted by Greg. He was super polite and asked how he could help. He walked me through rewiring this antique fixture in my dining room and got me through mounting it with no issues at all. Greg was extremely helpful and patient and I will definitely be using him and his team again in the future!!
Greg's team is the best! Mr. Electric are responsive, dependable, professional and work with a sense of urgency. Mr. Electric is our dedicated electriation from now on. We had an emergency outage day before New years Eve. Greg responded to my request within minutes, and the crew came out to my house within 2 hrs. We were out of state, and Greg kept us informed of the progress every step of the way. We later on has to work with insurance and Greg provided all the paper work, and even talked to our insurance to help us get the coverage. James and Nicolas worked day and night on the new years Eve and New years day to help get the electricity back. We were able to spend the new years Eve at home all thanks to Nicolas and James's hard work.
We had a bad wind storm, a tree fell on my neighbors property and it managed to completely rip out the power supply to our building. James and Nick came out and assured me that they could fix it in a timely manner. That was an understatement! They were so kind, professional and caring (I have a mentally disabled child and they understood my frustrations) they had my power supply reconnected to the building and the power back on by the very next day! (NEW YEARS EVE!) Saving me a TON of money on food and shelter expenses (due to cold temperatures outside)! Hero's in real life don't wear capes, they do their jobs with compassion for others. Thank you James and Nick #Grateful on Elm Park Dr.
James did a super job. He went above and beyond to replace the outlet for my oven. Also, he changed difficult to reach light bulbs in my stairwell and upgraded the light switch. Finally, Greg efforts to find time to squeeze me in for a last minute appointment on a busy holiday weekend. I appreciate both of them and the work they did. More importantly, I felt like they treated me as if I were part of their family.
